    Remembrance of youthful days brings delight.

    And talk of them is sweet and pleasing to me.

    Repeat the tales of youth, for they

    Banish cares from the heart and sweep them away.

    أفني وباقي نشوتي لا تَذهَبُ

    I have remnants of intoxication from those days;

    I perish, but what remains of my intoxication does not fade.

    Ah, for that time! For it is

    To me, the sweetest time of life.

    Days when I strutted in robes of youthful passion,

    And my temple-lock, in its blooming beauty, was black as night.

    And the sea of passion tossed me, and there was no

    Vessel in it for anyone but me in amorous folly.

    هَذي تُواصلنُي وهذي تعتُبُ

    And the beauties hovered around my affection;

    This one kept me company, and that one chided me.

    And whenever I thought of forgetting, I was stirred

    To greater yearning in love by the love of one who wooed me.

    And today a sight has alarmed the maidens—

    They loathe it—the grizzled hair along my cheeks.

    أنَّى يروقُ لهُنَّ بازٌ أَشهبُ

    How strange! They incline toward a jet-black raven;

    How could a pale-gray hawk appeal to them?

    Put this self-consolation aside; passion has gone.

    And go, for you have no path left to pleasure.
