ما المُوتُ عندَ ذوي الهوَى إلاَّ النَّوى
O my reproacher, I swear by Him who split the date stones:
O you who reproach me, I swear by Him who split the seed,
To lovers, death is nothing but separation.
Death to those infatuated is but the seed unsplit,
فَإلامَso until when? لومٌreproach والرَّكائبُand the riding-camels طُلَّحُworn out

حَسرَى تَسيرُ ونَجمُ شَملي قَد هَوى
How long, then, this reproach, while the riding-camels are worn out,
So why blame me, while fate's nights are jet-black,
Journeying exhausted, and the star of my union has fallen?
Regret moves on, and the star I wished upon has set.

The lands have borne far away a tribe's full moon, who left
The abodes will survive, though their moons are no more,
No one alive, yet love's anguish has not claimed his life.
Living they were, though their beauty was undone by fate.

Delicate-fingered—his figure, if you wished to
You could bend the branch of his softness if you wished,
Bend it, would bend, so supple are his limbs.
And twist it gently from the softness of his raiment.

Sweet is his saliva; the delicate mole on his cheeks
Of sweet agreeableness, the down on his cheek delicate,
Has taken its seat atop a throne like a red anemone.
Hovering above a throne, like anemone poised on high.

With languor in his eyelids, he let loose his temple-lock;
Below his eyelids he unleashed an arrow from his temple,
Thus he has commanded all creation to love.
And so commanded all creation to passionate love.

Manifold in his qualities, yet he
Of varied traits, except that with his seductive glance
Has taken hearts into bondage with his languid gaze.
He softened hearts, and ardor's thirst parched those enslaved.

Youth's self-admiration makes him sway, so you would take him for
Admiring youth bends him, taking him to be
A branch of arak swaying upon a curved dune of al-Liwa.
A bough of araak wood stirring softly in the breeze at dawn.

Cruel toward me; for my bondage to him there is no
He judges me, though in truth my secret love for him
Ransomer, nor in him any cure for my illness.
Grants me no redemption, nor any cure for my affliction.

As though the fire of my longing for him were burning ghada wood,
For the fire of my passion was rekindled by his disdain,
Upon which a wind blew where the waymarks diverge.
As the winds of blame blew from every direction.

And through many an uncharted desert race
And many a hidden encampment will his steed not visit
Riding-camels, their eyes sunken from thirst and hunger.
For fear of estrangement and the perils of departure.

If the star journeyed through it at dawn, it would not find its way,
If he had travelled by the stars at dawn he'd lose his way,
Or if lightning passed through it, it would fear destruction.
Or if lightning had crossed that terrain it would fear destruction.
