O Hama, the covenants of your people have been made firm;
My promises to your family are firmly tied
Their bonds with me are not to be undone.
Their reasons with me, they cannot be undone
لَكنَّماbut أَزِفَhas drawn near الرَّحيلُdeparture وهاand here أَناI
والعِيسُand the pale camels تَخدِيstride swiftly مُنشِدٌreciting verse وتُعرِّضُand veer aside
But departure has drawn near, and here I am,
But it is time for me to go, and here I am
Reciting as the pale camels stride swiftly and veer aside:
The lambs bleat, the singers sing, the camels kneel
أرضٌa land أروحُI depart بغيرِهاwith another in its place مُتعوِّضاًseeking a substitute
أَتُرىI wonder تَرىwill see عينيmy eye بمَنwith whom تتعوَّضُit finds compensation
A land I leave, seeking another in its stead—
To a land I travel, not this one, to find solace
Will my eye, I wonder, find anyone to take their place?
I wonder, I wonder, who will solace my eyes?
