عَسَىmay يشتَفيfind healing قَلبيmy heart وَيَلتذُّand take delight مسمَعيmy hearing
بِطيبِin the sweetness of حديثٍspeech منكمُfrom you مُتضوَّعِwafting fragrance
May my heart find healing and my hearing take delight
My heart may find joy and my ears delight
In the sweetness of fragrant words from you.
In your sweet talk, adorned with eloquence,
وَتَشرحُand bring relief عنfrom عَينيmy eyes ريَاضُgardens جَمالِكُمyour beauty
منزَّهةَa pleasure-ground for الألحاظِthe gazes منfrom غيرother than أدمُعٍtears
And may the gardens of your beauty bring relief to my eyes,
And the gardens of your beauty relieve my eyes -
A pleasure-ground for the gaze, without tears;
Pure sights spared of tears.
وتنظرُand look forth منfrom أغصانboughs بانِbān trees قُدودكُمyour figures
وُجُوهُfaces بُدوُرِfull moons منfrom دُجَىthe darkness of اللَّيلِthe night طُلَّعِrising
And from the boughs of your bān-tree figures may there look forth
From the branches of your slim waists I see
Faces—full moons rising from the darkness of night.
Moons rising out of the night's darkness.
علىyet أنكمthat you أينَwherever استقرتhave settled دياركُمyour dwellings
فأنتمfor you نُزولٌguests فيin الحَشَىthe heart بينَbetween أَضلُعيmy ribs
Yet wherever your dwellings may stand,
Wherever your homes are, you reside
You are guests in my heart, between my ribs.
In my heart of hearts, between my ribs.
ولاand no نظرةٌglance إلاَّexcept وأنتُمand you حضورهاpresent in it
ولاand no فكرةٌthought وإلاَّand except وأنتُمand you بهاin it معيwith me
And no glance but you are present in it,
No glance but you are there with me,
And no thought but you are there with me;
No thought but you are in it,
ولاand no نَفَسٌbreath إلاَّexcept بكُمbecause of you متصعِّدُrising
ولاand no طرفَeye إلاَّexcept نحوَكُمtoward you فيin تَطلُّعِeager looking
And no breath rises except because of you,
No breath but you are ascending in it,
And no eye but looks eagerly toward you.
No gaze but turning toward you with longing.
ولولاكمُand were it not for you ماnot قُلتُI said للبرقِto the lightning لامعاًflashing
عَسىperhaps خبرٌnews عنof جيرةٍneighbors ليof mine بلِعلعِat Laʿlaʿ
Were it not for you, I would not have said to the flashing lightning:
If not for you, I would not say to the flashing lightning -
“Perhaps there is news of neighbors of mine at Laʿlaʿ!”
Perhaps it brings news of a neighbor of mine.
ولمand did not ألقmeet علواءَthe first gust of النَّسيمِthe breeze مُسائِلاًquestioning
بزفرةٍwith a sigh محزونِof one grieving وأنهِand a moan موجعِof one in pain
Nor would I have met the breeze’s first gust, questioning it,
Nor would I ask the passing breeze,
With a grieving one’s sigh and a sufferer’s moan.
With a mournful sigh, if it hurts.
وَجُملةُand the sum of حاليmy state أنَّنيthat I فيin هَواكُمُlove for you
مُحِبٌّa lover مشوقٌyearning مُغرمٌlove-stricken غيرُnot مُدَّعِa pretender
And the sum of my state is that, in my love for you, I am
In short, my state is that I love you,
A lover, yearning, love-stricken, no pretender.
I yearn, desire, but make no false claim.
