لَكَfor you الخيرُgoodness قَدindeed زارَvisited الخَيالُthe apparition المُطالِعُvisiting
لَكَ الخيرُ قَد زارَ الخَيالُ المُطالِعُ
يَخُبُّtrots بِهِwith it رَكبُthe caravan الكَرَىslumber وَهوwhile it is ضائِعُlost
يَخُبُّ بِهِ رَكبُ الكَرَى وَهو ضائِعُ
May good be yours! The visiting apparition has come;
Goodness has come, imagination visited
the caravan of slumber bears it at a trot, while it is lost.
Frustrating the caravan of fate while lost
سَرىtraveled by night منfrom حُزونِthe rugged tracts الغورِal-Ghawr منfrom غَيرwithout مَوعدٍan appointment
سَرى من حُزونِ الغورِ من غَير مَوعدٍ
علىat غرَّةِan unguarded moment والطَّيفُand the phantom بالوصلِwith reunion خادعثdeceitful
على غرَّةِ والطَّيفُ بالوصلِ خادعث
It traveled by night from the rugged tracts of al-Ghawr, without an appointment,
It crept from the sadness of the deep valley unexpectedly
unawares—and the phantom deceives with reunion.
At the illusion of union, while the specter is deceitful
فياso, oh لكfor you منof طيفٍan apparition خَبتsubsided بِمزارهِat its visit
فيا لك من طيفٍ خَبت بِمزارهِ
لَواعِجُburning pangs شوقٍlonging فيwithin الحَشَىthe breast وَنَوازعُand yearnings
لَواعِجُ شوقٍ في الحَشَى وَنَوازعُ
Oh, what an apparition! Its visit stilled
Oh what a specter that disappointed in its passage
the burning pangs of longing within the breast, and restless yearnings.
Yearnings of passion in the chest and pulling
أتىcame طارِقاًas a night visitor جُنحَthe dark cover الظَّلامِdarkness فبادَرَتthen hastened
أتى طارِقاً جُنحَ الظَّلامِ فبادَرَت
إِليهِtoward it الُمنَىhopes واستَقبلَتهُand welcomed it الَمدامِعُthe tear ducts
إِليهِ الُمنَى واستَقبلَتهُ الَمدامِعُ
It came as a night visitor under cover of darkness; then hastened
It came at night spreading the wings of darkness, so the wishes
toward it hopes, and tearful eyes welcomed it.
Hastened to it and the tears received it
وماand not عادَwent back إِلاَّexcept والنُّجومُwhile the stars مِنَfrom السُّرىnight travel
وما عادَ إِلاَّ والنُّجومُ مِنَ السُّرى
أُفولٌsetting وَوَجهُand the face الصبُّحِdawn فيon الأفقِthe horizon طالِعُrising
أُفولٌ وَوَجهُ الصبُّحِ في الأفقِ طالِعُ
And it did not turn back until the stars, after their night journey,
It did not return except while the stars from Sura
were setting, and dawn's face was rising on the horizon.
Were setting and the face of dawn was rising in the horizon
لَقَدindeed عادَنيvisited me مَرآهُits image وَهناًlate at night وعادَنيand visited me
لَقَد عادَني مَرآهُ وَهناً وعادَني
بُرَيقٌa little lightning-flash علىon سَفحِthe slope الأُبيرقِal-Ubayriq لامِعُgleaming
بُرَيقٌ على سَفحِ الأُبيرقِ لامِعُ
Indeed, its image visited me late at night, and so did
It reminded me of its reflection, weak and reminded me
a little flash of lightning gleaming on the slope of al-Ubayriq.
A glimmer on the slopes of spears shining
أَياO جِيرتِيmy neighbors بالرَّملِin the sands رَملِthe sands of مُحَجَّرِMuhajjar
أَيا جِيرتِي بالرَّملِ رَملِ مُحَجَّرِ
أَهَلwill ...? عَيشنُاour life بالأَجرَعِat al-Ajraʿ الفَردِthe solitary راجعُreturning
أَهَل عَيشنُا بالأَجرَعِ الفَردِ راجعُ
O my neighbors in the sands—the sands of Muhajjar—
Oh my neighbor in the sands, sands of pebbles
will our life at lone al-Ajraʿ return?
Is our life with the lone palm tree returning?
لَقَدindeed طارَtook flight قَلبيmy heart يومَthe day بِنتُمyou departed عنِfrom الحِمَىthe protected pasture
لَقَد طارَ قَلبي يومَ بِنتُم عنِ الحِمَى
فَياso, oh عَجَباًwhat a wonder منat طائرٍa flying creature وهوwhile it is واقعُgrounded
فَيا عَجَباً من طائرٍ وهو واقعُ
Indeed, my heart took flight the day you left the protected pasture;
My heart flew the day you abandoned the sanctuary
so how strange—a flying creature, yet grounded!
Strange is a bird while still grounded
لَعلَّperhaps الذيthe one who أَبلَىafflicted بِتفريقِby sundering شَملِناour union
لَعلَّ الذي أَبلَى بِتفريقِ شَملِنا
بِكُمwith you بَعدَafter هذاthis البُعدِdistance والبَينِand separation جامعُreuniting
بِكُم بَعدَ هذا البُعدِ والبَينِ جامعُ
Perhaps the one who afflicted us by sundering our union
Perhaps the one who eroded our unity
will reunite us with you after this distance and separation.
Will unite us again after this distance and separation
