May al-Uthayl in al-Aqiq never be passed over
Do not exceed in the sharply twisted ʿuqayq,
By a rain cloud that turns the earth into a torrent.
A stream dropping down the plain hurriedly.
وَسَقىand may water اللهُGod بالثَّنِيَّةِat al-Thaniyya داراًa dwelling
جَمَعَتناbrought us together علىin السُّرورِjoy وليلَىand Layla
And may God water a dwelling at al-Thaniyya
And may God water with the bending valley a house
That brought us and Layla together in joy.
Which gathered us together in cheer and at night.

And may a breeze drift over it at dawn,
And a morning breeze wandered about it
Scented with Mandali aloeswood, trailing its hem through the meadows.
A Najdi one trailing its tail in the meadow.

Fragrant, it keeps driving at a gallop, in the race—
A perfume that does not cease galloping in the robe
—course of those ruins, the rain clouds' horses.
Of those tresses for the softly-walking horses.
ياO خَليليmy friend قِفpause ساعَةًa moment وابكِand weep عَنِّيon my behalf

My friend, pause a moment and weep on my behalf
O my friend stop for an hour and weep for me
For those ban trees, the protected pasture, and the little palms.
Over that home and the tribe and the palms.

Abodes of youth: long ago we knew
Four for youth: long ago we vowed
There upon their hills dear folk of our own,
To foster it there, and for us children were reared.

And a fair-featured one, gazelle-like in gaze
And beautifully mannered like the gaze of the wild cow,
And in turning, and like a bough in bending and swaying.
My bending over and the branch's inclination and bend.
يجعلُmakes اللَّيلَthe night بالجَبينِwith the brow نَهاراًday

وَيُعيدُand turns back النَّهارَthe day بالشَّعرِwith the hair لَيلاnight
He makes night into day with his brow,
Who makes the night into day on my forehead
And turns day back into night with his hair.
And makes the day by my hair into night.

مُستَهامٌa lovesick one يَستَرفِدbegging for الوَصلَunion نَيلاa favor
Stingy with his dream-image: no favor from him has been hoped for
A niggard with illusion who has not flowed from it
By a lovesick soul begging for union.
A downpour which asks union for a channel.

I have a body that, compared with his waist and my sickness,
I have a body from his waist and my sickness
Is frailer in strength and weaker in power.
Is weaker in strength and more feeble in stratagem.
