    Is it love’s return from your quarter that rouses it,

    or the flash of al-Sham’s lightning that shakes it?

    فَيُطرقُ إِجلالاً لهُ ويُعزُّهُ

    The breeze’s nightly passage shares talk of you with it;

    so it bows its head in reverence for that talk and cherishes it.

    Whenever the heart recovers from love’s searing anguish,

    the stirrings of longing from you begin to press upon it.

    And you are its fortress against time’s misfortunes,

    and its highest hope among humankind, and its treasure.

    Ask, O rulers of the heart, whether its secret has wandered

    beyond love for you, or whether anyone else can stir it.

    So no water has a spring except the lid of my eye,

    and no longing has its sting anywhere but in my heart.

    And indeed you are with me, despite your distance, as

    the remembrance of you rouses my heart, yet is its safeguard.

    So no heart guided by your beauty has gone astray,

    nor has a lovesick lover been abased, with you his glory today.

    فهذا حَديثي فيكُم ومَحَزُّهُ

    My inquiry is about you, not about the bān trees and the protected grounds;

    so this is my talk of you, and its very crux.
