Is it for a campsite in al-Ghawr, whose traces lie deserted,

that your eyes have rainstorms whose clouds pour down?

You wept as the wild lote-tree offered you its shade

at midmorning, and its gazelle struck your heart with a glance.

Its familiar landmarks grew unrecognizable after the tribe departed,

save one solitary landmark held within its heart.

Love's covenant is renewed for me in haunts

of that place, where passion is the soul's creditor.

And I remember it, with reunion's necklaces there—

their strung pearls vaunting themselves above the radiant stars.

How splendid the life I spent within its sanctuary,

a praiseworthy one; so after that, I do not blame it.

May its two clearings, in the spreading ghada tree's shelter,

be watered by lightning from clouds whose thunder peals.

And may its lover's weeping ever be like a downpour—

the torrents of my tears when its fragrant breeze wafts.

Dwellings—were it not for their pools' sweet coolness,

their herbage would not have grown lush and moist beneath the shade.
