Indeed, by the glances of the eyes,
The languid eyes and ample waist,
and the figure's drunken sway,
The pillows that honey and scent grace,
وماand by what صانَتpreserved مراشِفُهُhis lips
منof الجِريالِthe red wine والعَسَلand the honey
and what his lips have preserved
The pure glances that need no kohl,
of red wine and honey,
The solemn pact on the mountain we strolled,
وحقِّand by the sacred right نواظِرeyes غَنيَتhave no need
عنof التَّكحيلapplying kohl والكَحَلand naturally dark eye-rims
and by the sacred right of eyes that have no need
I'm now distracted from does and fawns,
of kohl-painting or naturally dark rims,
By love for one graceful yet stern,
وحرمَةِand by the sanctity عَهدthe pledge كاظِمَةٍKāẓimah
وليلَتناand our night علىupon الجبَلِthe mountain
and by the sanctity of the pledge at Kāẓimah,
Yes, his glances make one ache,
and our night upon the mountain:
And his cloak, like myrrh a tendril draped,
لَقدindeed أصبحتُI have become مشَغولاًpreoccupied
عنaway from الغزلانِthe gazelles والغَزالِand the gazelle
I have indeed become distracted
May he visit me, for in him lies,
from gazelles and the gazelle
My heart engrossed, enthralled, unwise.

by love for a slender, dusky beloved,
much given to rebuffs and boredom.

Yes, the glances of his eyelids
are like death to whoever loves him.

then the bān-tree's branch is abashed.

May he visit me, for indeed
my heart is preoccupied with him.
