لَوif كانَthere were لشرعِfor the law of الحُبِّlove ياO قومُpeople وُلاهrulers
لَو كانَ لشرعِ الحُبِّ يا قومُ وُلاه
ماnot بِتُّI spent the night وَمِنand he who هيَّمنيmade me lovesick عنِّيof me لاهheedless
ما بِتُّ وَمِن هيَّمني عنِّي لاه
If the law of love had rulers, O people,
Had love's law, O people, rulers to enforce it
I would not have spent the night while he who made me lovesick was heedless of me.
I'd not have yearned, care-crazed, sleepless, nor felt forlorn
لَوif صارَbecame سِواهُother than him فيamong البَراياcreated beings بَشَرٌa mortal
لَو صارَ سِواهُ في البَرايا بَشَرٌ
فيin الحُسنِbeauty نَبيَّاًa prophet كانَwould have قَدalready صارَbecome إِلَهa god
في الحُسنِ نَبيَّاً كانَ قَد صارَ إِلَه
If any mortal other than him among creation became
Had he in beauty's realm been but a mortal
A prophet in beauty, my beloved would already have become a god.
He'd be a prophet made; nay, e'en a god reborn!
