If your return is not to be found,
Then send your phantom to visit me in sleep.
Send your spirit back to me.

O you whose coldness kindles sorrow's fire in
O you who set ablaze the fires of anguish in
My liver—you spend no night in torment over my anguish.
My heart, do not spend the night tortured.

Why are your sleepy eyelids blocking
My thirsty heart that cool saliva?
The chilling indifference from my heart?

يا فوزُ من أَمسى إليها ساجدا
The place to kiss on you is nothing but a qibla;
A kiss from you is nothing
Oh, the triumph of whoever spends the evening prostrate toward it!
But, oh what bliss for one who falls prostrate to it.

Glory be to Him who gave you a tranquil gaze,
Glory to Him who gave you a gentle glance
Clothing hearts in grief, and hair cascading down.
That adorns hearts with longing and desire.

A glance and hair—in this and that you see nothing
A glimpse, a flush—you see in others
But lions of battle and black serpents.
Nothing but ugly blackness.

سَهَري فلا أُعطيتَ طرفاً راقدا
If you are pleased, O tormentor of my soul,
If you consent, my tormentor,
With my sleeplessness, then may you never be granted an eye that sleeps.
To my sleepless vigil, you have not granted rest to an eye.
