خلَّى جسَدي بفرطِ بلوايَ نَحيل
I love a young gazelle with languid eyelids and kohl-dark eyes.
I love a glance from eyes sick with yearning,
He has left my body gaunt through the intensity of my affliction.
My body is worn from the excess of my afflictions,
ماnot قلتُI said لهُto him صِلنيjoin me فقدfor indeed حانَis at hand رحيلdeparture
ما قلتُ لهُ صِلني فقد حانَ رحيل
إلاَّexcept that وتلاand he recited عليَّto me فيat الوقتِthe moment وَحِيلand a barrier was interposed
إلاَّ وتلا عليَّ في الوقتِ وَحِيل
Whenever I said to him, 'Join me, for departure is at hand,'
I did not say to him "Unite me," for departure was at hand,
he at once recited to me: 'And a barrier was interposed.'
And he recited upon me at the time subtle arguments.
