    I hastened with dark-red wine to al-Shaqra,

love's beautiful dwelling, and turned away from Muqra.

At al-Khalkhal I never left my hand without its cup,

and recorded a line in the chronicle of what delighted me.

Between the open grounds I saw a flowing 'petitioner',

    and could only greet it with a 'rebuff';

especially with the garden all around it as its

carpet, and the breeze having spread fragrance for it.

By God, what days passed on the two banks

of Yazid! In their joy, they were life itself.

And my aim was not Yazid and its coolness,

but my purpose was to gaze upon the flowers.
