Have you seen what al-Abraq’s bān trees relate

from the song of gray doves in Ḥuzwā’s leafy arāk trees?

A flash arrived, its radiance transmitting, with full attribution,

the tale on its authority, with its gleaming [light].

Its gleam kept consoling with hopes

me, the bearer of a sorrowful, yearning heart.

And retells the tidings of the ghaḍā trees, so I am lost in

my longing for them—and whoever parts must yearn.

No, by the sanctuary, life after the sanctuary’s people

is never cherished, nor passionately loved.

I swear by those upon the riding camels—and this

is indeed an oath from one whose sighs sear.

I truly marvel at a lover who seeks

life for himself once the she-camels are urged onward.

O camel-driver, by your safe return,

will you not pity our fellowship, torn apart?

Give the riding camels rest; here is my heart—take fire from it.

And be gracious to me; here are my tears—draw water.

And on Rāmah’s hills, among Ṭayyiʾ’s encampments,

O Saʿd, is a gazelle through whom my lot is wretched.

Adorned with every kind of beauty, though he wore

    no girdle—no indeed—nor any necklace.

Had he not departed, with beauty scattered throughout him,

my hair’s parting would not so soon have met with gray.

The wonder is not that my sleep has vanished

because of him, but that all of me remains.

How wondrous his mouth and its string of pearls!

How often he has spent the night scattering from it pearls of speech!

I weep; he smiles, revealing cool, sweet teeth, mocking

me, whose eyelid is anointed with tears.

To his coquetry I owe my abasement before him; to love for him

and passion for him, all the heart suffers and has suffered.

Separation has borne him far from me—a westward traveler

sending greetings to the camp of one journeying east.

O my neighbors at al-Ḥāḍirayn and by the Tigris,

and al-Kār—not at al-Nayrayyīn and Jilliq—

do not think I have patiently endured a calamity,

grave and afflicting, or an unsettling ordeal.

And know for certain, after this, that

my reliance is on generous Muẓaffar al-Dīn.

Whatever I have missed of that one’s kindness is guaranteed

by this one, through his overflowing bounty.
