Halt on the rugged ground of Huzwa,
Stop at Al-Hazn, where complaining is sweet,
For there lamentation grew sweet.
And wind through the meadows, gently bent.
وعُوجواand turn aside اللِّوىal-Liwa (the winding sands) وهناًlate at night
وحيُّواand greet منزلاًa dwelling أقوىَbecame deserted
And turn toward al-Liwa late at night,
Revive an abode, make it strong.
And greet a dwelling now deserted.
And if you come to Najd's fever,

فَخُصُّواthen single out البانَةَthe bān (moringa) tree القُصَوىthe farthest
And if you reach Najd's protected grounds,
Ask especially about Al-Banah.
Then single out the farthest bān tree.

Lend me tears for her,
That she may be watered - perhaps revived.
And shower her with them; perhaps she will be watered.
For how much time beneath her shade

قطَعناهُwe spent it كماas نَهوَىwe desire
For many an hour beneath her shade
We whiled away, as we wished!
We passed just as we wished.
And how many nights with her

And many a night was mine beside her,
We talked openly, whispering.
When we spoke our whispered confidences aloud.
And on the side of the sands I have

غَزالٌa gazelle أَغيدٌlissome أحوَىdusky
And at the edge of the sands I have
A gazelle, lonely, yearning,
A lissome, dusky gazelle.
Winding through the days of my pact,
لوَىhe twisted بالُمنحنىat the bend عَهديmy covenant
وماand did not عَنappear وماand did not أَلوَىturn back
He broke faith with me at the bend,
Not turning this way or that.
And neither appeared nor turned back.
Ask the eyelids of her eyes

لماذاwhy رُحنَthey became ليto me بَلوىan affliction
Ask the eyelids of his eyes
Why they have saddled me with affliction.
Why they have become an affliction to me.
And if I live, though love itself
فإِنfor if عشتُI live on وَقَدand already صَدَّhe turned away
فحُبيِّthen my love كُلُّهُall of it دَعوَىa claim
For if I live on though he has turned away,
Has barred the way, all is pretense.
Then all my love is merely a claim.
