Had they not streamed away in crowds at parting,
my eyelid would not have poured forth tears.

They departed, having taken my heart captive, and left
with me a burning grief that made me forget the farewell.

O Saʿd, help me, and fear lest you become
like me, felled by the gazelles’ glances.
لاdo not تأمنَنever feel safe مِنfrom أَنthat تبيتَyou spend the night بحالتيin my condition

Do not feel safe from passing the night in my plight,
complaining of sorrow, yearning, and consuming passion.

Speak secretly to the east wind; then, if you do not begin
to counsel me by proclaiming what it leads to—

O its hem, trailing from the bān-tree of al-Liwā,
standing upright—bring me your elevated tale.
كمhow often قدindeed بكيتُI wept بمَنfor one who بَكَىwept فيin منزلٍa dwelling
حتَّىuntil بكيتُI wept منازلاًdwellings ورُبوعاand encampments
How often I wept for one who wept in a dwelling,
until I wept for dwellings and encampments,
بمدامعٍwith tears لوif أنَّthat جعفَرهاtheir river بهِin it

with tears—had their river held within it
some bounty, it would have made spring bloom upon my cheeks.

They embraced separation; their union with it left
the paths of hope for nearness to them cut off.

And at the protected pasture are neighbors from Dhuhl's clan;
they acted unjustly, and so our union was torn apart.

At their settling, the ghaḍā trees and the bend envied
me my throbbing heart and ribs.

How often my long night, for all its length, passed
with them near, brief and swift.

You have gone to great lengths, O you who hope I forget them,
in counsel, exerting your utmost—if only you had called one who would listen!

It does not harm one who has come to defy the likes of you
that he never ceases to obey love.

You reproached my passion for a dusky beloved with striking black-and-white eyes;
has one who loves a marvel done anything unheard of?

Let me die of grief and longing, while you live
forever carefree—may I never be called dissolute.
