Grant me safety from those glances, O you of spear-straight stature,
Safety from glances, O Sa'dah of dignity
Perhaps with my kiss I may pluck the rose of your cheek.
Perhaps with my kiss I will pluck a rose from your cheek
وفَضاand an unsealing لذاكَfor that الخَتمِthe seal ياO مِسكةَa morsel of musk اللَّمىthe lips' dusky hue

And break that seal, O musk of dusky lips,
And room for that signet ring, O musky scent of the wild deer
So I may sip the honey within that mouth.
That I may sip what is in that mouth of sweetness
عَذوليmy reproacher هَداكَmay He guide you اللهُGod إِنif كنتَyou are عازماًresolved
علىto نزعِwresting free قلبيmy heart منfrom غرامٍpassionate love ومنَand from وَجدِlove's anguish
My reproacher—may God guide you—if you are resolved
Go gently with me if you are determined
To wrest my heart from passion and love's anguish,
To take my heart from passion and fervor
فصُنthen guard ناظريmy eye أَوor عنهfrom it صُنprotect مسرحَpasture الظبَّاthe gazelles

Then guard my eye, or shield the gazelles' pasture from it;
Guard my gaze or guard from it the pasture of gazelles
Otherwise, this blame and reproach do no good.
Otherwise this blame and reproach will not avail

علىin غِرةٍheedlessness منِّيon my part عدِمتُI lost بهاthrough it رُشديmy good sense
I cast a glance with my eye on the day of Nuʿmān,
I glanced one day at Nu'man with a glance
While off my guard; through it I lost my good sense.
Unwittingly thereby losing my wisdom
تَملّكَtook possession of منهاthrough it رِقَّbondage قلبيmy heart وحازَهُand possessed it

Through it, my heart was taken in bondage and possessed—
It captivated the softness of my heart and seized it
There, by a cruel one who has no pity on a slave.
Thereupon that tyrant who has no pity for a slave
رَشيقُgracefully slender قوامِproportions القدِّthe figure يَثنيhe turns إِذاwhen انثنَىhe bends

Gracefully slender of figure, when he bends he turns
The slenderness of your stature bends as it bows
My heart's depths toward ebb, and my tears toward flood.
Filling my mind with dread and my eyes with tears

He flirts like a white gazelle and gazes like oryxes;
Flirting, from behind a veil it looks
And he unveils a full moon and smiles to reveal a necklace.
Revealing a full moon, smiling with a string of pearls
جَفانيhe shunned me فلمso did not تبرَحdepart جُفونيmy eyelids بِهجعةٍwith a slumber
وأُنسيتُand I was made to forget نَوميmy sleep حينَwhen طالَgrew long بهwith it عهديmy acquaintance
He shunned me, so my eyelids never drifted into slumber;
It estranged me, yet my eyelids found no rest
And I was made to forget my sleep, so long had it been since I knew it.
And I forgot sleep when longing for you grew long

If sleep's drowsiness should bring me his phantom,
If the vicissitudes of fate send me your apparition
Then what a debt of gratitude I would owe to sleep!
What grateful hand can there be for fate in my eyes
