His phantom paid me a fleeting, furtive visit,

and the predawn darkness shone with its radiance.

It brought one I never thought I would win,

because of the guards upon his eyes, barring me.

May I never be deprived of sleep—that benefactor who secured the

pledges of companionship for me from one who wrongs me.

Despite his distance, it revealed him to me as a full moon in the dark,

upon a slender bough that swayed only with coy grace.

A phantom that spared me watching for lightning,

and welcoming an east wind with musk-scented breath.

It freed me from gilded promises,

from which I had sent my hopes running into despair.

So I passed the night in the night's abundant bliss,

enjoying dusky lips, the mouth, and the lips' dark-red hue.

I turn my gaze repeatedly upon a cheek whose freshness

is reserved for those who draw its water and borrow its flame.

A cheek—whenever I say that roses resemble it,

Beauty says, "Consider this and that, and compare."

I tore the sheaths of concealment from its anemones,

in defiance of the narcissi in the languid eyes.

Oh, what a visit! I had no hope

of it, knowing the visitor's harsh disposition.

Love spent the night at a mourning gathering because of it, while I,

through the phantom's mighty favor, was at a wedding feast.
