Had favor from you reached us, O Lamya,

your excess in forsaking us would not have harmed us.

But you turned away and offered no kindness,

and love's conditions include injustice and fairness.

The days of your estrangement are years, when counted

in truth, and single days are thousands.

Why does your side inspire no hope, though it has the

softness and suppleness of boughs when it bends?

I see you without the weight of certain ornaments,

while ornaments receive from you the gift of beauty.

If your waist complains of its necklace

from weakness, I have many times its suffering.

Alas for the reproacher! How long will he refuse to listen to

my excuse, and how long this insistence and importunity?

He feathers arrows of censure with reproach; they have

targets other than the ears of lovers.

What power has blame over a captive of one who turns to look,

gazelle-like, whose gaze snatches lions away?

He smiles, revealing fine-edged teeth like palm blossoms, which you would take for

pearls enclosed in shells of ruby.

He hastens with wine you see above his palm,

like the sun, its substance transparent in the cup.

In wine are traits of his crimson cheek and his appearance,

of his mouth's saliva, and of his eyes.
