قَتيلُone slain حبُبِّكَyour love معدودٌcounted منamong الشُّهداthe martyrs
فهاتِthen bring it لاdo not تُبقِleave ليfor me صَبراًpatience ولاnor جَلداendurance
The one slain by your love is numbered among the martyrs.
One slain by your love is counted among the martyrs.
Come then—leave me neither patience nor fortitude.
Then bring it on; leave me neither patience nor endurance.
عدمِتُmay I lose جسميَmy body إنif ذَمَّit condemns النُّحولَwasting away فقدfor indeed
رَضيتُهI have accepted it ليfor myself وقَلبيand my heart إنif شكىit complains of الكَمداgrief
May I lose my body if it condemns emaciation—for
May I lose my body if it condemns its wasting, for
I have chosen it for myself; and may I lose my heart if it complains of anguish.
I have accepted it for myself—and may I lose my heart if it complains of grief.
لِلعشقِfor passionate love قدرٌrank عظيمٌgreat ليسَdoes not يعرفهُknow it
إلاَّexcept مُكابِدُone enduring وجدٍpassionate longing يحرقُburns الكَبِداthe liver
Passionate love has a sublime worth that no one knows
Love has a lofty rank that no one knows
save one who endures a yearning that burns the liver.
Except one enduring a longing that burns the liver.
غَيٌّerror رَشَاديmy right course وَهتكيand my disgrace عندَin the eyes of عاذلَتيmy female reprover
صِيانةٌchastity وضَلاليand my straying فيin هواكَlove for you هُدَىguidance
My waywardness is rectitude, and my disgrace in my reproacher’s eyes
My right course is error; my disgrace in my reprover's eyes
is honor preserved; my straying in your passion is guidance.
Is chastity, and my straying in love for you is guidance.
واللهِby God لاnever قلتُI said هلis there ممَّاfrom what بُليتُI have been afflicted بهwith it
ليfor me منany خَلاصِescape ولاnor أضمرتُهI harbored it أبداever
By God, never have I asked, “Is there, from what afflicts me,
By God, I have never said, 'From what afflicts me,
any deliverance for me?”—nor have I ever harbored the thought.
Is there any escape for me?' Nor have I ever harbored that thought.
لاmay ... not كانَexist منwhoever أسكرتهُmade him drunk خَمرُthe wine لوعتِهِof his anguish
فيin يومِهhis present day ثمَّthen يرجوhopes أنto يُفيقَsober up غداtomorrow
May he cease to be, whom the wine of his anguish has made drunk
May he perish who is drunk on the wine of his anguish
today, yet who hopes to sober up tomorrow.
Today, yet hopes to sober up tomorrow.

O you enamored of lovers’ blood, spilling it
O you enamored of lovers' blood, shedding it
willfully, fearing neither blood-money nor retribution:
Deliberately, fearing neither blood money nor death in retribution.

sheathe your glances behind their eyelids, for indeed
Sheathe your glances in their eyelids, for indeed
you have shown us how the young gazelle takes the lion captive.
You have shown us how the young gazelle takes the lion captive.
لوif لمnot تظلَّyou remained بِهذاin this الحُسنbeauty مُنفرداًpeerless
ماnot بتُّI spent the night فيكover you بهذاin this الحُزنِsorrow مُنفرداalone
Had you not, alone, sought solace in this beauty,
Had you not remained peerless in such beauty,
I would not have spent the night alone in this sorrow for you.
I would not have spent the night alone in such sorrow over you.
علىon دُموعيmy tears وصبريand my patience كنتُI was مُعتمداrelying
مدامعيmy tears فَنيتare spent والصَّبرُand patience قدindeed نَفِداhas run out
I had relied upon my tears and my patience;
On my tears and my patience I relied;
my tears are spent, and patience too has run out.
My tears are spent, and patience has indeed run out.
