But for you, O gazelle of the dunes, never would
my heart and eye have become love-bewildered and sleepless.

No, nor would the breeze have gone forth recounting
a tale it narrated on longing’s authority, with due attribution.

Because of your figure, O gazelle, and an eye
of yours, I have loved a straightened lance and an Indian blade.
وأهيمُand I wander in love إِنif واجَهتُI face بدراًa full moon طالِعاًrising
وأُجَنُّand I go mad إنif عاينَتُI behold ظَبياًa gazelle أَغيداgraceful and supple
And I am lost in love when I face a rising full moon,
and go mad when I behold a graceful gazelle.

And among the great trees, a scent stirs my longing, redolent
with perfume, making a supple bān branch sway.

If your tresses have led one enslaved by love astray,
then, despite separation, the dawn of your front teeth has guided him.

Did you summon a heart that answered you willingly,
then turn away from it? What made you change?

Love for you still fills it with yearning
that forever stirs it—and this is not in vain.

And you have captured my heart, while my tears run free;
so pity one chained and fettered in your keeping.

You have made me a tale—would that it had never been!—through wasting sickness;
and my furthest reach in passion is only the beginning.
