إنif غاضَruns dry دمعُكَyour tears فيin عراصِthe open grounds of الأبرقِal-Abraq
فمتىthen whenever ادَّعيتyou claim هواهُمlove for them لمnot تصدُقِspeak truthfully
If your tears run dry in the open grounds of al-Abraq,
then whenever you claim to love them, you speak falsely.
ومتىand whenever اكتحلتَyou lined your eyes برقدةٍwith a spell of sleep فيin حَيهَّمtheir encampment
فاعلَمthen know بِأَنَّthat خيالَهمُtheir apparition لمhas not يَطرقِcome by night
And whenever you line your eyes with slumber in their camp,
then know that their apparition has not come by night.
فاصبرso be patient ولُذand seek refuge ولهِاًdistraught with love برسمِat the traces of ديارِهمِtheir dwellings
واخضَعand humble yourself وَقِفand stand فيin الدَّارِthe dwelling وقفَةَthe stance of مُشفقِone afraid
So be patient and, love-distraught, seek refuge at the traces of their homes;
and bow humbly, and stand in the dwelling like one afraid.
فَالعشقُfor passionate love أعَذبُهُits sweetest part الَمماتُdeath صَبَابةًfrom longing
منwhoever لَمhas not يَمُتdied صَباًlovesick كأنas though لَمhas not يَعشقِloved
For love's sweetest part is death from longing;
whoever has not died of love is as though he never loved.
إنif يَمَّمواthey make for عَينَthe spring of العَقيقِal-ʿAqīq فَعقَّهُthen may it furrow it
صَوبُthe downpour of الغَمامِthe clouds وإنbut if عدوهُthey pass it by فلاthen may it not سُقيbe watered
If they make for the spring of al-ʿAqīq, may it be furrowed
by the clouds' downpour; but if they pass it by, may it go unwatered.
بانواthey departed فلاthen no واللهِby God ماnot بانُthe moringa tree of الحِمَىthe preserve
عبقٌfragrant ولاnor يُزهىdoes it glory بغُصنٍin a bough مُعبقِsweet-scented
They have gone; no, by God, the preserve's moringa tree
is not fragrant, nor does it glory in a sweet-scented bough.
وسَرواand they journeyed by night وقدand already أسرواthey took captive الغمامَthe clouds إلىto ضَنٍone wasted by illness
هَاbehold قلبُهُhis heart منfrom ضَعفهِhis weakness لمhas not يَخفقِbeaten
They journeyed by night, having led the clouds captive to one wasted by illness;
lo, his heart, from weakness, no longer beats.
وَمشتَّتُand one parted from الأحبابِloved ones هلwill ...?
يوماًone day بجمعby gathering فريقهِhis band الُمتفرقِscattered
And one parted from his loved ones—will love draw near
one day, bringing his scattered band together?
سَلبواthey stole الكَرىsleep عنهُfrom him فأَرسلَso he sent رائِداًa scout
فيin إثرهمtheir wake مِنfrom دَمعةِa teardrop الُمتدَفِّقِstreaming
They stole his sleep, so he sent a scout
in their wake, drawn from a streaming tear.
ويَظلُّand he keeps يُنشِدُreciting والرِّياحُwhile the winds تُهيجهُstir him
باللهِby God ياO ريحَwind الصبَّاthe east wind هلshall ...? نَلتَقيwe meet
And he keeps reciting, while the winds stir him:
“By God, O east wind, shall we meet?”
