إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle لاحَflashed بَرقُlightning الجِزعِof the valley bend حَنَّاit yearned
وَراحَand went إِليكمtoward you صَبّاًlovesick مُعَنَّىtormented
Whenever lightning flashes at the valley bend, my heart yearns,
and goes toward you, lovesick and tormented.
وَباتَand spent the night بِكُمbecause of you كَأَنَّas though بِهِin it جُنوناًmadness
يُلابِسُهُenvelops it إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اللَّيلُthe night جَنَّاfell
And because of you, it spends the night as though possessed by madness
that grips it whenever night falls.
وَكَمand how often أَهدىoffered حَمامُthe doves الجِزعِof the valley bend وَهناًlate at night
إِليهِto it حِمامَهُits death لمَّاwhen تَغَنَّىthey sang
And how often, late at night, the doves of the valley bend have offered
it its death when they sang.
وَهَبَّتand blew مِنكُمfrom you فيin الحَزنِthe rugged land ريحٌa wind
فَهاجَso stirred هُبوبُهاits blowing للِقَلبِfor the heart حُزناsorrow
And a wind blew from you across the rugged land,
and its blowing stirred sorrow in the heart.
لَقَدindeed هَنَّأتُI congratulated قَلبيmy heart فيin هَواكُمlove of you
وَقَدand indeed أَضحىhas become لَكُمfor you فيin البُعدِseparation سُكنىa dwelling
Indeed, I have congratulated my heart on loving you,
now that, in separation, it has become your dwelling.
وَعَينيand my eye كُلَّمَاwhenever اشتاقَتyearned إِليكُمfor you
رَأَتit saw مَهمَاwhatever تَرَىit sees بَدراًa full moon وغُصيناand a little bough
And whenever my eye yearns for you,
whatever it sees, it sees a full moon and a little bough.
وَقَدand indeed نَقَلَcarried النَّسيمُthe breeze إِليَّto me مِنكُمfrom you
حَديثاًa tale لَمhas not يَزلceased يَزدادُto increase in حُسناbeauty
And the breeze has carried to me from you
a tale that never ceases to grow more beautiful.
وماand not طَمِعَhoped العَذُولُthe reproacher بأنthat يرانيsee me
مُصيخاًlistening attentively فيكمُconcerning you للعَذلِto reproach أُذناan ear
And the reproacher has never hoped to see me
lend an attentive ear to reproach concerning you.
فأنتمfor you are لَذَّةُthe delight الدُّنياof this world ولولاand were it not for
هَواكُمlove of you لمnot يكنbe فيin الخلقِcreation معنىmeaning
For you are the delight of this world; and were it not
for love of you, there would be no meaning in creation.
