Nothing kept my eyelid from closing

but a glimmer relentless in its flashing.

My heart fluttered at its flickering and became, as

love decreed, wholly given over to sickness.

It was no Syrian lightning, but an archer,

twanging its bow as it pleased with every pulse.

Ah, what a rain cloud! Its hint

of loved ones lay, for me, in its turning away.

Its gleam remains enthralled and enamored

of the bend, its thickets and its meadows,

until the bright, life-giving rainstorms leave

its pools filled, like its basins,

    يَختالُ عاري التُّربِ في فَضفاضهِ

    and there the rain clouds weave the brocade of cloaks;

the naked earth struts in its ample folds.

Ruins where I lingered—my temple-locks not yet showing

white amid their black—for the beautiful women,

each a woman of lovable qualities,

trailing the hem of beauty’s flowing robe.

She shoots, when she looks, with an eye whose arrow

has no targets but the body’s vital spots.
