رَأَىhe saw البَرقَthe lightning نَجدِيَّاًfrom Najd فَحَنَّso he yearned إِلىfor نَجدِNajd
وَغادَرَهُand it left him حِلفَa sworn companion of الصبَّابةِardent love والوَجدِand longing
He saw lightning from Najd and yearned for Najd,
And it left him a sworn companion of ardent love and longing.
وَذَكَّرَهُand it reminded him of الحَيَّthe tribe الجَميعَgathered together وَعهدهُمand their former days
بِهِin it وَزَماناًand a time مَرَّthat passed بالعَلَمby the hill الفَردِthe solitary
And it reminded him of the gathered tribe and their days
There, and a time that passed beside the solitary hill.
فَباتَso he spent the night يُسَلِّيsoothing النَّفسَthe soul منfrom لاعِجِthe searing pain of الأَسَىsorrow
وَيشتاقُand he longs for جيراناًneighbors علىbeside البانِthe moringa trees والرَّندِand the laurel trees
So he spent the night soothing his soul against searing sorrow,
And longing for neighbors beside the moringa and laurel trees,
ويَسأَلُand he asks عنabout نارِa fire علَىon أَبرقِthe stony rise of الحِمَىal-Hima (the protected pasture)
وإِنeven though كانَit is لاnot يُغنيhelpful السُّؤالُthe asking ولاnor يُجديavailing
And asking about a fire on the stony rise of al-Hima,
Though asking neither helps nor avails.
فَمَاso what is wrong لفُؤاديwith my heart إِwhen (apparently truncated) تَنَوَّرتُI spied from afar نارَهُمtheir fire
غَداit became آجمِاًaverse قَدindeed هالَهُalarmed it شِدَّةُthe fierceness of الوَقدِthe blaze
What ails my heart, that when I spied their fire,
It grew averse, appalled by the fierceness of the blaze?
أُعَلِّلُI soothe قَلبيmy heart بالنَّسيمِwith the breeze إِذاwhen سَرَىit passes by night
عَليلاًgently وأَهوىand I love نَسمةًa breath of air منfrom صَباthe east wind of نَجدِNajd
I soothe my heart with the breeze as it wafts by night,
Gently, and I love a breath of Najd's east wind.
لِئَنif indeed أَشرَفَتrose aloft بيwith me فيin الشَّامِthe Levant قُنَيَّةٌQunayya
وَعاينَتand I beheld أَطلالَthe ruins of الدِّيارِthe dwellings علىfrom بُعدِa distance
If indeed Qunayya has borne me aloft in the Levant,
And I have beheld the dwellings' ruins from afar,
بَلَغتُI attained منfrom الأَيامlife's days ماwhat كُنتُI was أمِلاًhoping for
وأَصبَحتُand I came to be مِنfrom بعدِafter الشَّقاوِةِmisery فيin سِعدِgood fortune
I have gained from life what I had hoped for,
And after misery have come into good fortune.
