Have you seen anyone but yourself, O life of souls,
who guards the freshly gathered rose with narcissus?

Or have you heard of a sun on the horizon that rose
before your face, in the darkness of the retreating stars?

منكَ الجبينَ بشمعةٍ في المجلسِ
No one strayed from the right path who likened
your brow to a candle in the gathering.

بزِمامِ هاتيكَ الجُفونِ النُّعَّسِ
Have you forgotten our night, when slumber had seized
the reins of those drowsy eyelids?

When I asked, 'Where is the wine?' you answered evasively:
'A sip from my dusky lips will spare you any need of it.'

So I clasped you to me, a bough that was not
clothed in thickets beneath its fine robes.

Oh, how lovely that night was! Nothing marred it
except the brightening of its breathing dawn.

You aimed arrows at the watchers that night,
from your eyes, with your eyebrows as their bows.

I had never hoped, before it, for its like;
so you sent me back, and I did not despair of its like.
