أَيُطمِعُنيdoes it make me hope? مِنَّهُfrom him الهوَىlove بوصالِهِfor union with him
وَصَيدُwhile catching نجومِthe stars of الأُفقِthe horizon دونَeasier than خيالِهِhis image
Does love entice me to hope for union with him,
Does he allow me to hope for his affection?
when catching the horizon's stars is easier than reaching his image?
Yet he is like a mirage beyond reach.
بَعيدَfar off دُنُويِّmy drawing near منto مكانِthe place of حُجولِهِhis anklets
وتلكَand those العواليthe tall lances السُّمرُdark-hued حولَaround حِجالِهِhis curtained chambers
Far am I from drawing near to the place of his anklets,
Far, so very far from where I abide,
with those tall, dark lances around his curtained chambers.
While those heights are desolate around his valley.
كشمسِlike the sun of الضُّحىmidmorning فيin بُعدِهاits remoteness وشُعاعِهاand its radiance
وبدرِand the full moon of الدُّجىnight's darkness فيin حسنهِhis loveliness وجمالِهِand his beauty
Like the midmorning sun in its remoteness and radiance,
Like the midday sun in its distance and rays,
and like the full moon of night in his loveliness and beauty.
Like the nightly moon in its beauty and splendor.
لهhe has مبسمٌa smiling mouth ماnot زادَincreased قلبيmy heart صبابةًardent longing
وحرَّand the burning heat of جَوىًlove's anguish إلاَّexcept بَبردِthrough the coolness of زُلالِهِits limpid water
He has a smiling mouth that has heightened my heart's longing
His smile has never increased my joy;
and love's burning anguish only through the coolness of its limpid water.
Nor has the heat of passion cooled but by his shade.
يُسائِلنيhe asks me عنabout طَيفهِhis phantom مُتبالِهاًfeigning ignorance
ومَنand who ليfor me بذاكَwith that one بالسَّائلِwith the questioner الُمتبادلِهِthe one exchanging it (possibly 'feigning ignorance')
He asks me about his phantom, feigning ignorance;
He questions me about his vanishing image,
and who will help me with that questioner [apparently feigning ignorance],
But who can respond on my behalf to his inquiry?
إذاwhen قالَhe says بالإعجابِwith admiration كيفَhow تركتَهyou left him
يقولُhe says لهto him أنتَyou العَليمُthe one who knows بحالِهِhis condition
when he says admiringly, 'How did you leave him?'
If he says in wonder, “How could you leave him?”
by telling him, 'You know his state best'?
Tell him, “You know best his condition.”
وماand what ضرَّهwould harm him لوif أنَّهthat he بجميلهِwith his kindness
يُضيفُhe adds إلىto مُستَغرَبٍa marvel مِنof جمالِهِhis beauty
And what harm would it do him if, with his kindness,
It would not harm him if his beauty
he added to the marvel of his beauty?
Were to attract more admiration from strangers.
سُهاديmy sleeplessness وإنand even if أفَنىit consumes فِداءُa ransom for رُقادِهhis sleep
وذُلّيand my abasement وإنand even if أضنىit exhausts فِداءُa ransom for دَلالِهِhis coyness
My sleeplessness, though it consumes me, is a ransom for his sleep,
My pillow, though worn from dreaming of his rest;
and my abasement, though it wastes me, a ransom for his coyness.
My humility, though humbled for his arrogance.
