Do you think the lightning flashes, when they rise and appear,

bring you nearer a dwelling deserted and far away?

Then what do you hope for when you glimpse a flash

that flickered over their ruined dwellings and shone?

How often an ailing breeze stirs you,

having gone away and returned with the fragrance of musk!

Do not be deceived, for its fragrance cannot mend

your plight, which has worsened in your love for Layla.

What ails the reproachers? They charge me with their own sin.

Is my offense anything but Layla and passion?

They said, 'How long this misery?' So I answered them:

'I would not have known what misery is, had she so wished.'

Enough, O reproacher, for you are not the first to seek

something to which the sons of passion have never returned.

    اللهُ يشهدُ منه لي ببراءتي

    Do not think that your reproach is proof;

God bears witness on my behalf that I am innocent of it.
