Do you hear what the breeze says to you,

just before dawn, when the night sent it forth?

It reports that the people of the valley bend have settled

there; that is why the fragrance has spread.

They walked there, and so the dust became musk,

and the dwellings and their traces were perfumed.

And it kissed their feet in longing

for them—it is their old dwelling.

And the ben tree leaned in delight, and there came to be

patterns there to embellish the gardens.

Whenever a bough swayed, so did a bough

of human form, well-proportioned and upright.

And moons of beauty shone forth there,

with stars upon them from their swaying.

O dear people of the valley bend, will a time gone by

return—for my love for you abides—

and the sands of al-Waʿsāʾ, through you, become

garlanded, with a finely strung necklace?

For my heart, after your departure, is filled with longing,

sorrowful, and passion is its creditor.
