ثَمَّthere إِلاَّonly روحيmy soul خُذوهاtake it فدِاكُمa ransom for you
Your coldness has lasted long in the arena of rejection.
There is only my soul—take it as your ransom.
أَسأَلُI ask اللهُGod إِنif قضَيتُI meet اشتِياقاًout of longing
فيin هَواكُمlove for you نَحبيmy end يُطيلُto prolong بَقاكُمyour lives
I ask God, if I die of longing
in my love for you, to prolong your lives.
كُنتُI was قَبلَbefore الهَوىlove عَزيزاًhonored كَريماًnoble
ماnot عَرفتُI would have known الهَوانَhumiliation لَولاwere it not for هَواكُمlove for you
Before love, I was honored and noble;
I would not have known humiliation but for loving you.

My masters, I have long angered my reproachers
only in eager hope of your approval.
يَطلُبُونَthey seek الُمعرضِونَthose turning away عَنِّيfrom me جَفاءًcoldness
ماhow أَمَرَّbitter الجَفاcoldness وَماand how أَحلاكُمsweet you are
Those who turn away from me seek coldness.
How bitter coldness is, and how sweet you are!
طالَhas grown long بَينيbetween me وَبَينكُمand between you أَمَدُthe span of البَيbeginning of 'the separation'
نِcompletion of 'the separation' تُرانيdo you think I أَحياwill live لِيومِuntil the day of لِقاكُمmeeting you
Long has the span of separation stretched between me and you;
do you think I shall live to see the day we meet?

You are the opposite of me—how
poor I am in my need of you, and how rich you are!

Do not entrust my heart to the strength of my patience;
may God console you for the loss of my endurance.
