أُخبرتُI was told أنَّthat الحمَىthe protected grounds أقوتlay deserted مَعالِمُهُits landmarks
مِنهمof them ومنand for أَجلهمtheir sake ناحتlamented حمائِمهُits doves
I was told the sanctuary's landmarks lay empty
Of them, and for their sake its doves lamented.
ونُكَّستand were bowed عَذباتُthe tips الرَّندِthe laurel بعدَهُمُafter their departure
وَجداًin yearning ولِلحُبِّand love has أَحزانٌsorrows تُلازمُهُthat cling to it
And the laurel's tips bowed after they left,
In yearning—and love has sorrows that cling to it.
والبانُand the bān tree قدindeed ذَبُلتwithered مِنهُof it الغُصونُthe branches أَسىًin sorrow
عَليهمُfor them واللِّوىand the sandy bend اعتلَّتgrew sick نَسائِمُهُits breezes
And the bān tree's branches have withered in sorrow
For them; and the sandy bend's breezes have grown sick.
فرحتُso I went أسألُasking عنهمabout them أينwhere هُمthey وهُمُthough they are
عنديwith me لِيَطرُقَso that it may reach سَمعيmy hearing ماwhat يُلائمُهُpleases it
So I went asking after them: 'Where are they?'—though they are
With me—so that what pleases my hearing might reach it.
هُمthey جِيرتيmy neighbors حيثُwherever حلُّواthey dwell والفُؤادُand the heart لهُمfor them
دارٌa home ودَمعيand my tears لهُمَfor them ينهَلُّpours down ساجِمُهُits streaming flood
They are my neighbors wherever they dwell; my heart is their
Home, and for them my streaming tears pour down.
لَهُمtheirs منfrom القَلبِthe heart ماthat which لوحلَّif someone dwelt غَيرُهُمُsomeone other than them
بهِin it شَجَاهُwould grieve him منَfrom الإِقواءِdesertion طاسِمُهُits effaced traces
Theirs is a place in my heart where, should another dwell,
Its traces, effaced by desertion, would grieve him.
والطَّرفُand the eye يَطرفُهَwounds it الدَّمعُthe tears السَّفوحُgushing وَهُمwhile they
فيهِwithin it النُّزولُthe guests وَقَدand yet يَخشاهُfears it عارمُهُits fierce assailant
And streaming tears wound the eye, while they
Are guests within it, though even its fierce assailant fears it.
إنif تمَّis complete صُمَّis sealed shut علىupon قلبيmy heart فياthen oh عجباًwonder
أنىhow يضامُis wronged فؤادُa heart هُمthey تَمائمُهُits talismans
If it is complete, my heart is sealed shut—how strange! [Wording unclear.]
How can a heart be wronged when they are its talismans?
I became enamored of them فيin صِبَاthe youth of الدَّهرِtime القَديمِancient وَماand not
عَرَفتُI knew شيئاًanything سِوىexcept ماwhat القلبُthe heart كاتمُهُconceals it
I loved them when ancient time was young, and never
Knew anything but what my heart conceals.
فَراحَso became حُبُّهمُlove for them مِلءَthe fill of الفُؤادِthe heart وَماand not
يَزُولُdeparts حُبٌّlove بلاwithout حُبِّa love يُزاحِمُهُthat crowds it out
So love for them filled my heart; nor
Does love depart without another love to crowd it out.
