إليكُمto you بكمthrough you فيin حُبكمlove for you أتوسلُI seek a means of approach
فأنتمُfor you are مَلاذيmy refuge والذينand those whom أُؤملُI place my hopes in
To you, through you, in love for you, I seek to draw near.
For you are my refuge, and those in whom I place my hopes.
غريمُthe creditor غَراميmy ardent love فيكمُfor you لقَديمهِfor its antiquity
حَديثٌnew; a report كدمعيَlike my tears مطلقٌunbound ومسلسلُand linked in chains
The creditor of my passion for you, for all its age,
Is new, like my tears—unbound and linked in chains.
وإنand if راحbecame شرحُthe exposition الدَّمعِof tears فيin العينِthe eye مُجملاًcondensed
فإيضاحُthen the explanation وجديof my anguish فيamong سوِاكمthose other than you مُفصلُdetailed
And though the tears’ account within the eye is condensed,
Yet my anguish is fully explained among those other than you.
جعلتكمُI made you ليfor myself قبلةًa direction of prayer كلماwhenever بدَتit appeared
أشفُّI sip ثراهاits dust طاعةًin obedience وأُقبلُand I kiss
I have made you my direction of prayer; whenever it appears,
I sip its dust in obedience and kiss it.

When our hearts fall ill, then for them
I seek healing solace in a vision of your remembrance.
وإنand if ظمئَتthey thirst بالشَّوقِwith longing نحوَtoward جمالِكمyour beauty

And if they thirst with longing for your beauty,
Then the sweet water of love for you quenches them when they drink.

When our eyes take your beauty as kohl,
They shine with the kohl they draw from your light.

And if a breeze from your dwellings clasps my hand,
I hasten to you and do not delay.

And indeed, from the eyelids of your august presence we have been greeted
By an east wind of welcome—[remaining Arabic unclear].
إذاwhen نقلتI transmit عنكمfrom you حديثاًa report فإنهُthen indeed it
صحيحٌsound; authentic بماby what بيis in me بلrather حديثٌa report معللُflawed; ailing
When I transmit a report from you, it is
Sound, by what ails me—rather, a report with a hidden flaw.

Nor did I forget, in the night of error, while we had
A messenger from your glance, sent for guidance.
