Shall I gain release from love's captivity?

How can I escape, when this is no time for escape?

I am smitten with a departing beloved; before the day I meet him, how much

shattering of livers and graying of forelocks!

He assails me with the bright sword of his glance,

and with the dark, quivering spear of his stature.

My tears and my patience for him—this one obeys

me when I summon it, while that one rebels.

His glances wounded my heart, and so

I took revenge on his cheeks with my own glances.

He would not forsake me and go to such excess if he saw

the sincere devotion to him within my heart.

How long this unjust blame and estrangement, O pearl of the

    diver—nay, O hunter's antelope calf!

Were it not for my love of you, no tale about me would have spread,

recounted by those near and far.

O archer whose glances have torn apart so many

firmly wrought coats of shining mail with their arrows!

Your charms distract me from dwellings

now deserted by their people, and from open courtyards.
