    فإلى كم يا عَذولُ

    I have no turning away from them;

    how long, then, O reproacher?

    The ugliest thing to me

in their absence is beautiful patience.

My tears have been shed in vain only

    since those ruins lay deserted.

They grew desolate, bereft of those who in the

    heart and eye abide.

    Their nearness to me, like

patience apart from them, is impossible.

And their estrangement is like my night:

this and that are both long.

Leave me alone, since you have not helped

    me against them, O reproacher.

The gray dove and I, in lament

and amid the spreading trees, have our chapters.

No healing comes from them to my

    heart by letter or messenger.

    Rather, may we be reunited,

so I may lament and speak.
