Ask the lightning about Lamya: where has she gone?

I wonder, in what abode has she settled after Tayma?

Indeed, its hills have become unadorned without her.

Oh, would that I knew where she alighted and brought beauty!

She embittered—as the pale camels sped with her by night,

racing—a life so often sweetened by her before.

    ولو لم تُخالِطها دموعي لحلَّتِ

    I wept, and made drinking the waters forbidden;

and had my tears not mingled with them, they would have been lawful.

Ah, by bygone nights of youth

now ended, and by fleeting days now gone—

indeed, bewilderment seized me when they came forward—

each swift she-camel—to scatter the gathered company.

I could not tell: were they domed canopies

borne by the mounts, or full moons amid crescents?

And in the caravan is one—if I ever gave anyone but her

my hand on a day of covenant and pledge, may it be paralyzed!

A maiden reared in a curtained chamber: were the night of her hair to fall

upon the forenoon sun, it would go astray seeking its way there.

    ألا إنَّ فيها عِلَّتي وَتعلَّتي

    I seek healing from her ailing eyelids;

indeed, in them lie my sickness and my solace.

I stood on al-Aqiq's sandy ground, questioning

dwellings whose traces lay desolate, and which had vanished.

And what use could there be in questioning landmarks

whose dwellings' roofs have collapsed and been laid low?

So would that the protected pasture's lowland meadows never grew green,

for its camel litters have departed and moved away.

And would that persistent rain never fell upon a camp,

now that its moons lie hidden within the canopies.

Peace upon the age of youth that has passed,

while my soul had not had its fill of its ample shade.

And ah, for the days of gray hair, in which

the deep darkness of blindness cleared and passed away!

Through them I came to know this age and its people,

so I came to forgive my gray hair every fault.

I tested mankind through experience, but found among them no

upright friend who could relieve my need.
