قَسماًI swear لقدindeed قالَspoke العذولُthe reproacher فَأكثراand spoke at length
لكنَّهُbut he أغرىspurred on بذاكَby that وماand did not درَىknow
I swear, the reproacher spoke, and spoke at length,
But by that he only spurred me on, without knowing.
نَشرَunfolded الصبَّابةَardent longing حينَwhen حاولَhe tried طَيَّهاto fold it away
وأَرادضand he sought إطفاءَto extinguish الغَرامِpassion فأَسعَراbut inflamed it
He unfolded longing when he tried to fold it away,
And sought to quench passion, but set it blazing.
أَيظُنُّنيdoes he think me ممَّنamong those who يَرُومُseek سُلُوَّهُto forget him
هَيهاتَfar from it ذلكَthat لاnot نراهُwe see it ولاnor يُرَىis it seen
Does he think me one who seeks to forget him?
Far from it! We do not see that, nor is it seen.

بَادٍplainly visible هواكضyour love صبرتَyou endured patiently أمor لمdid not تَصبِراendure patiently
Confess your passion, for concealing it does you no good.
Your love is plain, whether you endure patiently or not.
منwho ليfor me بِوَسنَانِwith a drowsy one الجُفونِeyelids أَنامَهاhe put them to sleep
عَنَّيheedless of me وأقلقضنيand made me restless عَليهِover him وأسهَراand kept me awake
Who will bring me the one with drowsy eyelids, who has lulled them to sleep,
Heedless of me, yet left me restless over him and sleepless?
تدمىَbleed مقاتلُنَاour vital parts بأَبتَرِby the severing blade of لَحظهِhis glance
أَوor مَاnot سمَعِتَyou heard السَّيفَthe sword يُدَعىis called أَبتَراthe Severer
Our vitals bleed beneath the severing blade of his glance;
Or have you not heard the sword called 'the Severer'?
فَحذارِso beware ثُمَّthen حذَارِbeware منof لَحظاتهِhis glances
فكَليلُهاfor their blunt edge يبريcuts through القُلوبَhearts إِذاwhen انبَرىit comes forth
So beware, and beware again, of his glances:
For even their blunt edge cuts through hearts when it strikes.

Do not be deceived; take the tale of love's anguish from
My heart; whoever knows the truth can tell it.
ومتَىand whenever زأتsaw عينَاكَyour two eyes طَرفاًan eye أسوداًblack
فاعلمthen know بأنَّthat هُناكَthere مَوتاًa death أحمراred
And whenever your eyes behold a dark eye,
Then know that crimson death is there.
