If his promises to his lovesick lover had been kept,

his bough would not have withered from rejection.

And had he pitied the sufferer's anguish,

his efforts would not have persisted in banishing him.

He claims the river of my longing is everlasting,

though he swells it through his excessive estrangement.

Indeed, by my patience! I was betrayed in loving him

by his trusted one, when his rightly guided one strayed.

My heart, in loving him, cannot withstand

love's embers, whose very ice is scalding water.

I would ransom him, aloof as he is; his mastery shines in

scanning the prosody of his conduct:

    وَهجرهُ طويلُهُ مديدهُ

    so his union is its Swift, its Light;

and his estrangement its Long, its Extended.

Why do I see his eyelids as my conqueror,

where his dust is the lord of my cheek?

O judge, whose witnesses have decreed that, for us,

my heart must perish in the fires of love:

I knew my body when it was overwhelmed

by wasting, since none but you can restore it.

Far be it from you to assail with rejection

a heart whose mainstay now lies broken.
