قالواthey said عَشقتَyou have fallen in love كثيرَone abundant in البُخلِstinginess مُمتنِعاًunattainable
قالوا عَشقتَ كثيرَ البُخلِ مُمتنِعاً
فقُلتُso I said هيهاتَfar from it! عنكمfrom you غابَwas hidden بأَطيَبُهُwith his finest quality (unclear form)
فقُلتُ هيهاتَ عنكم غابَ بأَطيَبُهُ
They said, “You have fallen for one so miserly and unattainable.”
I replied, “Far from it! His finest quality has escaped you” (wording uncertain).
لوif جادَhe were generous هانَhe would be held cheap وقلتُand I would say الجُودُgenerosity عادُتُهُhis habit
لو جادَ هانَ وقلتُ الجُودُ عادُتُهُ
وانَّماand only عَزَّhe became precious لَّماbecause عزَّwas difficult مَطلبُهُattaining him
وانَّما عَزَّ لَّما عزَّ مَطلبُهُ
“Were he generous, he would be held cheap, and I would say, ‘Generosity is his habit.’”
“He is precious only because winning him is difficult.”
