May my father and mother be your ransom, my dear friend.
You are my bow when I shoot, and my arrow.
أنتَyou واللهِby God ليfor me حُسامٌa sharp sword جُزازٌkeenly cutting

You are, by God, a keen, cleaving sword for me;
In it lies the most decisive end to calamities.

How could I fear humiliation when you give me honor
To which a star's ambition has never risen?

Necklaces of lofty virtues were strung in you,
Beyond the reach of all my prose and verse.

My master, your servant cannot bear to complain
Of what he suffers from overwhelming longing and sickness.

Since my star turned away, I have known that I
Am sinking in all my affairs, and my star with me.

The nights, to me, are darkness and injustice,
After that dusk of lips and that gleam of teeth.

So may God reward you with goodness on my behalf;
You have never ceased, whatever your state, to bear my cares.

In short, after him, I have tears
Pouring and streaming like your bounty.
