I fear, on passing by your dwelling,

my gaze's meddling with your traces.

And what use are the hills after you are gone,

if they are not filled with your night-time companions?

You have forgotten me, while I am lost in love,

my heart unsettled by remembering you.

Even our pledges have grown bewildered

at my full acknowledgment and your utter denial.

O my masters, if my dying thus

from my anguish [uncertain reading] is the fulfillment of your desires,

then would that whatever is taken from my lifespan

were added to the span of your lives.

You have robbed my eye, by withholding

all news of you, of sleep's sweetness.

News of you is like the east wind's breeze

in sweetness—how sweet is news of you!

Lo, with the dream-phantom I have indeed had

encounters that tell of your secrets.

The days have no excuse if they do not turn

dark after your lights have gone.

By God, the sun on its horizon does not have,

when it appears, the splendor of your moons.
