ماwhat بالُهاher condition ليسَdoes not يَثنيهاsway her تثنَّيهاher swaying
وَلاnor مَعاطِفُهاher curves بالعَطفِto tenderness تُغريهاentice her
What ails her, that her swaying does not soften her,
Her grace cannot be bent, nor can her kindness
nor do her curves entice her to tenderness?
Nor do her virtues yield to compromise
إِذاwhen دَنتshe draws near ظَلَّcontinues to فَرطُexcess الدَّلcoquetry يُبعدِهُاkeep her distant
وإنand if نأتshe goes far away باتتِspend the night الأحلامdreams تُدنيهاbringing her near
When she draws near, excessive coquetry still keeps her distant;
When she draws near, desire itself retreats
and if she goes far away, dreams bring her near through the night.
And when distant, dreams themselves draw close
أبكيI weep فتضحكُand she laughs منfrom عُجبٍvanity ومِنand from عَجَبٍwonder
فالغيثُfor the rain والبرقُand the lightning فيin جفنيmy eyelid وفيand in فيهاher mouth
I weep, and she laughs out of vanity and wonder;
I weep, and she but laughs in wonderment
for rain is in my eyelid, and lightning in her mouth.
So thunder and lightning fill my eyes and hers
ياO بانُbān tree غُصنُكَyour branch لِيناًin suppleness ليسَdoes not يُشبهُهاresemble her
ياO ليلُnight بدرُكَyour full moon حُسناًin beauty ليسَdoes not يحكيهاresemble her
O bān tree, your branch does not match her in suppleness;
O bent branch, nothing can match your softness
O night, your full moon does not match her in beauty.
O crescent moon, no beauty can describe yours
فيon خدَّهاher cheek وردَةٌa rose للحُسنِwith beauty ناضرةٌradiant
لمdid not يجنِcommit ذَنباًa sin سوىexcept منwhoever جاءcame يَجنيهاto pluck it
Upon her cheek is a rose, radiant with beauty;
On her cheek blooms a rose of peerless beauty
none has committed a sin except whoever came to pluck it.
That has committed no crime but to let itself be plucked
يهنيكَmay it delight you قُلبُbracelet قُربٌnearness منto معاصمِهِاher wrists
وأنتand you يَاO عِقدُnecklace مَسٌّa touch منfrom تَراقيهاher collarbones
May nearness to her wrists delight you, O bracelet;
How fortune has favored you, to be so close to her wrist
and you, O necklace, may the touch of her collarbones delight you.
While you, bracelet, can freely wrap around them
لوif تنطِقُcould speak الشَّمسُthe sun قالتshe would say وهيَwhile she is صادقةٌtruthful
ماwhat فَّيin me فيهاin her وماbut not فَّيin me الذيthat which فيهاin her
If the sun could speak, she would say truthfully:
If the sun could speak, in truth it would say
"What is in me is in her, but what is in her is not in me.
I have no splendor to match what is in her
هَبنيgrant that I أُماثِلُهاmatch her نُوراًin light وفرطَand intensity of سناًradiance
منfrom أينَwhere أَملِكُcould I possess معنىًa quality منof معانيهاher qualities
Grant that I match her in light and intense radiance—
Grant me her equal in brilliance and overflowing charm
how could I possess even one of her qualities?"
For I have no means to fathom her depths
