    O sword of a glance among his glances, be gentle!

    For indeed I have found being slain for love of him easy.

    فَقَد سَبَقَت بالقَتلِ مُقلَتُهُ النَّجلا

    And O spear of stature from his body's curves, move gently;

    For his wide eye has already been first to slay.

    Whenever [unclear wording] he sways the slender spear of his stature,

    So, O gaze, how deadly! And O stature, how sweet!

    And were he not a gazelle, his eyelid would not be

    Seen naturally kohl-dark without ever having known kohl.

    And a dot of a beauty mark—his glances from a love-stricken one [syntax unclear]—

    And how many hearts it has broken, how many actions it has cut short!

    And but for the uprightness of his stature, his side would not

    Lean upon my weakness—and I count it justice.

    And he forsakes me in long estrangement, though I

    See his distance as nearness, and his estrangement as union.

    And when he went to his secret's dwelling within the heart,

    And saw what had scorched the heart and what had worn it away,

    وَزَفرتُهُ تُسلي وما حُبُّهُ يُسلَى

    He knew that my heart had perished from passion's searing fire;

    And his sigh brings solace, yet love for him is not forgotten.
