بالجزعِat al-Jizʿ, the valley bend مُذsince شطَّwent far away الخَليطُthe company النازحُdeparting
قَلبٌa heart بهِwithin it للوَجدfor longing زَندٌa firestick قادحُstriking sparks
At al-Jizʿ, since the departing company went far away,
Since the troubled throngs departed,
there is a heart where longing's firestick strikes sparks.
My heart is pierced with burning grief.
سَلبَتُهُrobbed it of حُسنَthe beauty of الصَّبرِpatience أَحداقُthe eyes of الَمهاoryxes
واغتالَهُand slew it unawares ظَبيٌa gazelle بوجرةَat Wajra سابحُrunning swiftly
The eyes of oryxes robbed it of graceful patience,
The tears of sorrow robbed my patience of beauty,
and a swift-running gazelle at Wajra slew it unawares.
While a howling wolf ambushed me.
وَعَلىand on الشِّعابِthe ravines الغُرِّbright منof أَرضِthe land of الحِمَىal-Ḥimā, the protected pasture
صَبٌّa lovesick man يُراوحُvisits at evening رَندَهاits laurels ويُبارحُand departs
And on the bright ravines in the land of al-Ḥimā,
On the rugged cliffs of the sanctuary,
a lovesick man visits its laurels at evening and departs.
A youth roams, lamenting as he goes.
غَيرانُjealous قدindeed غارَgrew jealous الحيَاthe rain منof دَمعِهِhis tears
لَمَّاwhen بداappeared بالغَورِin al-Ghawr, the lowlands بَرقٌlightning لاِحُgleaming
A jealous lover—the rain has grown jealous of his tears,
Jealous of life, his tears flow,
when a gleaming flash of lightning appeared in al-Ghawr.
When lightning flashed in the valley below.
كَمhow often يكتُمُhe conceals الحُبَّlove المصُونَguarded وَدَمعُهُand his tears
إنif عَزَّproves difficult ذِكرُmention of العامِرِيَّةِthe ʿĀmirī woman بائحُreveals it
How often he conceals his guarded love, while his tears,
How love and its tears are concealed,
if mention of al-ʿĀmiriyya proves difficult, betray it.
If the memory of the flourishing place is painful!
أَهواكَI love you ياO باناًa bān tree علىon شَرفِthe heights of الحِمىَal-Ḥimā, the protected pasture
ويشُوقنيand makes me yearn نَشرٌfragrance لِعَرفِكَof your perfume فائحُwafting
I love you, O bān tree on al-Ḥimā's heights,
I long for you, O abode on the hilltop.
and the wafting fragrance of your perfume stirs my longing.
A breeze from you to me would be most welcome.
وأَودُّand I wish لوthat جادَwould grant generously الزَّمانُtime بِساعَةٍwith an hour
ليfor me فيكَwith you ياoh ليتَif only الزَّمانَtime يُسامحُwould relent
And I wish that time would grant an hour
I wish time would grant me an hour with you.
for me with you—oh, if only time would relent!
If only time would forgive me for longing!
ويُميلُنيand sways me مِنكَfrom you النَّسيمُthe breeze مواجِهاًcoming to meet me
منfrom عِندِthe presence of سُكَّانِthe dwellers of الحِمَىal-Ḥimā, the protected pasture وَيُصافحُand shakes hands
And the breeze from you sways me, coming to meet me
The breeze from the sanctuary’s dwellers
from al-Ḥimā's dwellers, and shakes my hand.
Would turn to me and clasp my hand.
فَعَسىso may يَبُثُّit conveys الشَّوقَlonging عَنيon my behalf جِيرَةٌneighbors
غابواthey have gone away وَعِندهُمُand with them فُؤادٌa heart نَازحُfar from home
So may it convey my longing to neighbors on my behalf,
Perhaps those who left would ease my yearning,
who have gone away, with a heart far from home in their keeping.
Their hearts displaced like troubled waves.
لولاهُمُbut for them ماnot كانَwould be عندَيwith me لَوعةٌburning anguish
كَلاَّno indeed ولاnor للبينِfor parting خطبٌa calamity فادحُgrievous
But for them, I would feel no burning anguish—
Without them, I’d have no deep sadness,
no, indeed, nor would parting bring a grievous calamity.
No overwhelming calamity or grief.
