يذيقُهاhe makes them taste رائحاًgoing at evening حضيفاًunclear in the supplied text ومُغتدياand setting out at dawn
He spent evening and day assailing souls,
The evening fell descending on souls so oppressively,
making them taste [an unclear word], as he goes at dusk and dawn.
Inflicting on them a miserable, wretched air.
فانظرso look تجدهُyou will find him برمحِwith the spear of القدِّstature مُعتقلاًbearing a spear
يهزُّهُhe brandishes it وبسيفِand with the sword of اللَّحظthe glance مُرتَدياgirded
Look: you will find him bearing the spear of his stature,
Look and you will find it captured by the spear of fate,
brandishing it, and girded with the sword of his glance.
Shaken, dressed in the sword of the moment.
تَراهُyou see him إمَّاeither لِهذاfor this one مُشرعاًleveling a spear أبداًalways
مُسدِّداًaiming straight ولذاand for that one تلقاهُyou find him مُنتضياdrawing a sword
You see him either forever leveling this one,
You see it either stretched forever for this one,
aiming it straight, or else drawing that one.
Taking aim, and for that one you find it after.
بنَرجسِwith the narcissus of اللَّحظِthe gaze يحميhe guards وردَthe rose of وجنتهِhis cheek
فواso, alas عناءًsuffering لمنfor whoever يأتيهِcomes to him مُجتَنياgathering
With the narcissus of his gaze he guards the rose of his cheek.
With the narcissus of the moment, it protects the rose and its garden,
Oh, what suffering for whoever comes to pluck it!
So woe to whoever comes to it intending to pick.
وردٌa rose يخالطُmingles with آساًmyrtle منfrom سوالِفهhis sidelocks
وذاand this one وهذاand this one بماءِwith the water of الحُسنِbeauty قدindeed سُقياboth were watered
A rose mingles with myrtle from his sidelocks,
A rose mingling with twigs from its conversations,
and both have been watered with the water of beauty.
Both this and that watered by the spring of beauty.
إنif قلتُI say ريمٌa white gazelle يفوقُsurpasses الريمَthe white gazelle ملتفتاًturning
أوor قلتُI say غصنٌa bough يفوقُsurpasses الغصنَthe bough مُنثنياbending
If I say, “A white gazelle,” he surpasses the gazelle when he turns;
If I said a branch surpassing branches bent,
or say, “A bough,” he surpasses the bough when he bends;
Or said a breeze scent surpassing the breeze's scent,
أوor قلتُI say للرَّاحto the wine ريَّاsweet fragrance ريحthe scent of نكهتهِhis breath
فالرَّاحُthen the wine تعلمُknows منِّيfrom me أنَّthat ذاكthat رياpretence
or tell wine it has the sweet fragrance of his breath,
Then the breeze would know from me that this is but a breeze.
then wine knows from me that this is pretence.
O witness of a human with eyes that if he did not spill
ياoh لهhe has منa (introducing an exclamation) ناظرٌan eye إنسانُthe pupil of مقلتهِhis eye
بغيرِof anything but سفكِshedding دمشblood (probable reading) العشَّاقِlovers ماnot غَرياbecame enamored
Ah, what an eye he has! The pupil of his eye
The lovers’ blood, would not change.
has loved nothing but shedding lovers’ blood.
The full moon graced him only with glory and radiance,
لمdid not يحككَresemble you البدرُthe full moon إلاَّexcept in رفعةًloftiness وسناًand radiance
كلاَّno indeed ولاand not الشَّمسُthe sun إلاَّexcept in بهجةًsplendor وضياand light
The full moon resembles you only in loftiness and radiance;
Neither did the sun except with joy and light.
no—nor does the sun, except in splendor and light.
I was destined to be roasted by the fire of union
حتامَuntil when أُضحيI spend the day لنارِat the fire of الوصلِunion مُصطلياًwarming myself
ولمand not أزلI have ceased لكَfor you دونضin preference to (probable reading) الخلقِcreation مُصطفياchoosing
How long shall I warm myself at the fire of union,
And I have always been for you the elite of creation.
though I have always chosen you above all creation?
If only I could see you suddenly appear
منwho ليfor me أراكَI see you كلمحِlike the flash of البرقِlightning مُجتلياًbeholding
وجهاًa face لمُبينهِto the one revealing it ليto me ماnot زلتُI have ceased مُجتنبياavoiding (form uncertain)
Who will grant me a glimpse of you, like lightning’s flash, beholding
A face that has always avoided showing itself to me.
a face whose revealer to me I have always avoided [wording uncertain]?
In my confusion, if I did not speak revealing,
بمهجتيwith my heart’s blood لكَfor you إنif لمnot أمسI became by evening مفتياًgiving legal rulings (possibly corrupt)
ففيthen in هواكَlove of you لقدcertainly أصبحتُI have become مُفترياa liar
If I have not become a giver of rulings for you with my heart’s blood [wording uncertain],
Then in my love for you I have become accusing.
then I have indeed become a liar in my love for you.
For my critic it is so easy to blame you
لعاذليَّfor my two reproachers ملامٌreproach فيكَconcerning you أيسرهُthe mildest of it
يهدُّcrushes جسميmy body بهwith it هدآa crushing (probable reading) فلاso may not هُدياthe two be guided
My two reproachers blame me over you; the mildest of their blame
That would calm my body without guidance.
crushes my body utterly—may neither of them be guided!
Damned is my critic! If only
تبَّتmay perish عاذليّmy two reproachers ليتَif only أنَّهماthe two of them
بماwith what ابتليتُI was afflicted بهwith it منfrom هجركَyour abandonment ابتُلياthe two were afflicted
May my two reproachers perish! If only they both
He were afflicted with the separation from you that afflicted me.
were afflicted with what I have suffered from your abandonment!
My heart and eyes bought my murder from you.
قلبيmy heart وطرفيand my gaze علىin قتليkilling me قدِindeed اشتراكاthe two joined forces
أتنتهيcan it turn away? عنكَfrom you ياO روحيmy soul وأنتَand you هيَit (the soul)
My heart and my gaze have joined forces to kill me.
Can I abandon you, O my soul, when you are it?
Can it turn away from you, my soul, when you are that very soul?
Oh love! How much does its rule judge me,
ويحَwoe to الهوىlove كمhow long إلىuntil كمhow long حكمُهits judgment أبداًalways
عليَّagainst me حتَّىso that ولاand not يوماًa day أراهُI see it لياin my favor
Woe to love! How long, how long, must its judgment always be
Never seeing for me a single clear day?
against me, so that not even for one day do I see it in my favor?
