يقولُsay أُناسٌsome people أَبصرونِيَhave seen me صامتِاًsilent
وَقدand indeed عَرفونيthey have known me حُجَّةَan authority الشُعَراءِthe poets
Some people who have seen me silent say,
though they have known me as an authority among poets:
نَراكَwe see you تَركتَyou have abandoned النَّظمَverse لاnot تَلتقيyou meet العِداthe foes
بِذَمِّwith censure ولاnor أَهلَpeople of الصَّفاsincere affection بِثَناءِwith praise
“We see you have abandoned verse: you meet neither foes
with censure nor true friends with praise.”
فَقُلتُso I said لهُمto them عُذريmy excuse بِذلكَfor that واضِحٌclear
لأَنِّيbecause I أَرَىsee خَوفيmy fear شَبيهَakin to رَجائيmy hope
So I told them, “My excuse for that is clear:
for I see my fear as akin to my hope.
فلاso not ليfor me صَديقٌa friend يستَحقُّdeserves مَدائحِيmy praises
ولاnor ليfor me عَدوٌّan enemy يُرتَضيis deemed suitable لِهجائيfor my satire
So I have no friend who deserves my praises,
nor any enemy fit for my satire.”
