بِتُّI spent the night للنَّجمِfor the star فيin هَواكَlove for you سَميراa nighttime companion
فَعلامَso why تَصُدُّdo you turn away عَنِّيfrom me نُفوراin aversion
In love with you, I spent the night keeping the star company.
I pine for the star in your horizon
So why do you turn away from me in aversion?
Why do you spurn me so?
أَنتَyou أَدرىknow best بِماof what يُلاقيهِencounters it قَلبيmy heart
مِنfrom لَظَىthe blaze الحُبِّof love أَوَّلاًat first وأَخيراand at last
You know best what my heart endures
None know the fires of love in my heart
From the blaze of love, first and last.
At first and last but you
قُلتُI said للاّئمينَto the reproachers فِيكَconcerning you وَدَمعيand my tears
فَوقَupon خدِّيmy cheek يَحِكيresembles السَّحابَthe clouds الَمطيراrain-laden
I said to those who reproached me for you, while my tears
I said to those blaming you while my tears
Upon my cheek resembled rain-laden clouds:
Flowed like rain on my cheek
لاdo not تَلومواblame فيin الحُبِّlove مَنthe one who لَمhas not يَدَعleft ليfor me
Do not blame in love the one who has left me
Do not blame love in one whose fame
Nothing ever worth mentioning among humankind.
Was never spread among men
هَجرُهُhis estrangement قَدhas indeed أَصَمَّdeafened سَمعِيَmy hearing وأَعماand blinded

His estrangement has deafened my hearing and blinded
Estrangement made me deaf and blind
Me, though formerly I could hear and see.
When once I was keen of sight and hearing
آهِah! لَوif only جادَhe bestowed generously ليon me بِرَشفِwith a sip of رُضابٍsweet saliva

Ah, if only he would grant me a sip of sweet saliva
Ah, would that his sweet temper balm me
From him, now blended with camphor,
Now tinctured essence of camphor
وَرَثىand he took pity ليon me منbecause of مَدمَعٍa stream of tears فَوقَupon خَدِّيmy cheek

And pity me for a stream of tears upon my cheek,
Would that his tears once streaming down
In the darkness of night, made to gush in torrents,
My cheek burst forth anew

He would go, by God, safe upon a day
By God, he left one fell day
Terrifying, whose evil was far-spreading.
Though the evil of it was yet unseen

So may God protect you on that day
May God give you joy therein
And grant you radiance and joy,
And grace you with bliss and cheer

And recompense you, seeing you did good
Good among people, with a garden and silk,
To people, with Heaven and silk

Reclining on couches, you will not
Reclining on couches, you behold there
See therein either sun or bitter cold.
No sun, yet hear no harsh sound

Where you exercise discernment, you then find bliss,
You have all you wish for, everlasting,
Forever enduring, and a vast kingdom.
A great dominion is yours

Indeed, this is the reward of one who has done good
Such is the wage of one whose works were fair
Work, and whose striving has been appreciated.
And whose efforts were thanked
