    لَما اشتقُتُ غُصناً مائِساً في نَقا رَملِ

    O ʿAlwa, were it not for the solace of love and desire,

    I would not have yearned for a swaying branch on a sandy dune;

    أَريجُ نِسيمِ البَانِ والرَّندِ والأَثلِ

    Nor would I have fallen for the skittish gazelle, or been stirred to longing by

    The fragrance of the breeze through moringa, laurel, and tamarisk;

    منَ الثَّغرِ في لَيلٍ من الفَاحمِ الجَثلِ

    Nor would the incisor’s lightning have drawn me aside, gleaming

    From the mouth amid a night of thick, coal-black hair;

    Nor would I have spent the night watching the stars because of my passion for you,

    While the breaths of my longing in the darkness were my messengers to you.

    And but for you, his passion would not have played havoc with my body,

    Nor would I have gone about, robbed by desire, bewildered in mind,

    Felled by a figure like a Khatti spear, lying prostrate,

    Slain by swords of wide eyes.

    Unite with a lover whose love has been destroyed by passion,

    And who is now preoccupied by the torment of yearning.

    His burning thirst yearns for the coolness of darkness,

    Which cools the heat of separation in an hour of union.

    So do not withhold union, O goal of all desire,

    From an ailing, lovesick lover—far be stinginess from you!

    For union with you after death—I deem it

    My life; and separation from you, O my heart’s desire, is my death.
