رَوَّتهُ دَيمةُ كلِّ غيثٍ مُمطِرِ
A ruined dwelling of ʿAlwa, this side of Muḥajjar’s foot,
Ruins of a dwelling below a rocky hill
Watered by the steady rain of every pouring shower.
Watered by the rain of every downpour

عنَ غَيرِ طيِّبِ نَشرهِ لم تَنشُرِ
And a languid little breeze passed over it by night,
Over it blew an ailing breeze
Spreading nothing but its sweet fragrance,
That spread no fragrance of its pleasant dispersal

ومُخَضَّبٍ ومُدَرهَمٍ ومُدنَّرٍ
Until its mantle grew striped with sprig-like patterns,
Until its chill mingled with shortened robes
And dyed, dirham-like, and dinar-like blooms.
And dyed and gilded and figured ones

A dwelling I loved, while the bough of my youth
A garden I was devoted to, and the branch of my youth
Was fresh, and the night at my temples was not yet moonlit.
Still green, though its prime at night was not moonlit

God be praised for the season of youth I spent
By God, the time of my youth I spent
In its air, with pure, intoxicating wine,
In its atmosphere, sipping pure wine

With every shapely youth who swayed a spear-shaft
With each graceful, swaying, gazelle-like one
Of his own stature, and turned an oryx calf’s eye;
With shapely neck and fawn-like doe eyes

And a graceful, tall, slender maiden: were she veiled
And a delicate, elegant one - if unveiled
With the full moon on its fullest night, it would not shine.
On the full moon night, she'd not be outshone

A tender maiden shows you a languid eyelid that was not
Your cheek makes evident to me a sick, sleepless eye
Innocent of slaying a passionate, enamored lover like me.
Was not, for killing a passion-maddened lover like me, remorseful

She smiles, revealing a mouth whose pearls are neatly arrayed,
It sheds, from a dewy mouth whose pearls
Its carnelian encircled by two strings of jewels.
Were adorned by its ruby with priceless jewels

It protects its kisses with a gaze whose arrow
Kills outright without a strung bow.
Can slay without even a taut bow
