Ask the gleam over al-Ḥimā, should it flash from Iḍam,
Ask the gleam over the protected pasture, if it flashes from Iḍam,
about me and my condition—about you, and about my sickness.
about me, my condition away from you, and my sickness.
أبيتُI spend the night فيin حبكِّمlove for you ياO سلمُSalm مستلماًreaching to touch
ومضَthe flash البريقِthe lightning's gleam وأهوىَand I long for نَفحةَa breath السَّلمthe acacia
I pass the night in love with you, O Salm, receiving
I spend the night in love with you, O Salm, reaching to touch
the lightning’s flash and yearning for a breath from Salm.
the lightning's flash, and longing for the acacia's breath.
إذاwhenever شمَمتُI smelled نسيماًa breeze منfrom جنَابِكُمُyour abode
أَماطَit removed عَنِّيfrom me لثامَthe veil الضُّرِّaffliction والألَمand pain
Whenever I scent a breeze from your precinct,
Whenever I catch the scent of a breeze from your abode,
it strips away from me the veil of affliction and pain.
it lifts from me the veil of affliction and pain.
وإنand if تناشدتُمُyou remind one another عهداًa pledge بِكاظمةٍat Kāẓima
وحقكُمand by your honor ماnot نَسينَاwe have forgotten مَوقفَthe stopping place العلَمِthe landmark
And if you invoke the pledge once made at Kāẓima,
And if you remind one another of a pledge at Kāẓima,
by your right, we have not forgotten the stopping-place at al-ʿAlam.
by your honor, we have not forgotten the stopping place by the landmark.
أُراقبُI watch for الطَّيفَthe dream-vision منكمfrom you إنَّfor indeed زورَتَهُits visit
تَسقيgives drink to جَوَىburning anguish الرَّاحِwine منof جِسميَmy body مكانَin place of فَميmy mouth
I watch for a phantom from you; indeed, its visit
I watch for your dream-vision, for its visit
lets my whole body, instead of my mouth, drink the wine of consuming longing.
gives wine to the burning ache in my body, rather than to my mouth.
فكيفَso how أَحظىcan I attain بِطَيفٍwith a dream-vision منof خَيالِكُمُyour image
والجفنُand the eyelid فيin حُبِّكُمlove for you سَهرانُwakeful لمnot يَنَمِsleep
Yet how can I attain a phantom of your image
How, then, can I win a dream-vision of your image,
when my eyelid, for love of you, stays wakeful and never sleeps?
while my eyelid is wakeful for love of you and has not slept?
أهَوىI love هَواكُمloving you ولولاand were it not for ذاكَthat ماnot بَليَتwasted away

رُوحيmy soul ولاnor اخترتُI chose ليfor myself وجداًardent longing علىover العَدمِnothingness
I love your love—and but for that, my soul would not
I love loving you; but for that, there would have been no wasting
have wasted away, nor would I have chosen passion over nonbeing.
of my soul, nor would I have chosen longing for myself over nothingness.
خُذواtake حديثيmy tale فإنَّfor indeed النَّاسthe people تنشُدُهُrecite it
منfrom لاعِجٍa searing passion بكُمُfor you فيin القلبِthe heart مُضطَرمِblazing
Take up my tale, for people recite it:
Take my tale, for people recite it,
the tale of one whose heart blazes with a searing fire for you.
born of a searing passion for you, blazing in my heart.
ولاand do not تَقولواsay سلاhe ceased longing عنَّاfor us فكيفَso how وَقَدand already

Do not say, “He has forgotten us.” How could I, when
And do not say, 'He has forgotten us'; how could I, when
in love of you I have become flesh laid upon a butcher’s block?
I have become, in loving you, meat on a butcher's block?
وَحقِّكُمand by your honor لاnot أَرانيshowed me القَلبُthe heart غَيرَكمُother than you
ولمand not يزلcease to be ربعكُمyour abode منsince سَالفِbygone القدَمِantiquity
By your right, my heart has shown me none but you,
And by your honor, my heart has shown me none but you,
and your dwelling within it has endured since ages past.
and has always been your abode, since ages past.
