وَطرفي ساهرٌ هذا مُحالُ
Can a dream-vision of you visit in the darkness,
Does an apparition of you visit me in the dark night
while my eye keeps vigil? That is impossible.
While my eyes stay awake, how is this possible

بأيِّ جنايةٍ حُرمَ الوِصالُ
You have prolonged your estrangement—if only I knew
You severed ties, if only I knew
for what offense union was denied.
What crime denied me union

My nights, which once were short
Nights that were once short
with you, are long since your departure.
Are now long after you left

May our days by Huzwa's arak trees be watered,
You watered our days with the sight of you
and those hills, by heavy clouds.
And those meadows are now burdened with heavy clouds

ووشَّت أرضَها أيدي سَوارٍ

And may the hands of night-traveling rainclouds embroider their earth,
And the land was combed by the hands of rainfall
pouring and streaming down upon it.
Pouring and flooding over it

And may the east wind never cease faithfully recounting
And the morning rain still waters the meadows' vitality
the tale of their gardens, though it is ailing.
And speaks of their gardens though impaired

Abodes of youth—my heart still
My heart still has homes in the dwellings
has a bond there with the one I love.
Where it connects with my beloved

My tears after her are a Dal and Meem
on my cheek, with them, are mīm and dāl.
On my cheek a Meem and Dal
